This weekend!

My other Chinese Classmates had a party to celebrate the Chinese New Year, but I did not join them to have a class at 6:30 on Friday. A instructor did no come because he was tied in a traffic accident. I neither hanged out with my classmates nor had a course on Friday night. How very disappointing! To enjoy The Chinese New Year with family members to the full, I had had a night of the final research paper. I was done with it till now.

All the family members including my aunt who worked far away from home gathered together on The Chinese New Year Eve. My family remained some traditions of The Chinese New Year. We did not make Jiaozi because we were busy in working or studying. My aunt bought JiaoZi in a Chinese supermarket, but its taste was not delicious. My aunt gave my cousin and me “luck money” after dinner. The meaning of “luck money” is that luck and happiness comes to you in next year.

I had a bad day!

I could have had two conversation session with Annette on Thursday. One began at 11:00, the other was 11:20-11:40. As long as I left for York University on Thursday morning, I received a phone call from my superior who was in BeiJing. The time difference between Toronto and Beijing is 13 hours. As the content is about my future career, and there was noisy outside, I had to stay at home to answer it. He gave me suggestions on my resume which I had had a night of. The suggestions included elaborating on working experience. I felt down.I spent 50mintues on the oversea call. While I was answering his call, I was called off the first conversation session on the Internet. I expected that I should arrived there on time.

Everything seems to go wrong on Thursday. First, I told about the traffic. While I was waiting for the crossing signal, there were three successive buses on the opposite side on road. The next bus was not on time. It should has come in 6 minutes, but I took more than 10 minutes to wait for it in this cutting wind. Second, when I arrived at Nexus, it was 11:25. At the beginning of the conversation session with Annette, she dissatisfied at my punctuality. She said that it was impolite to being late. We took 5 minutes to discuss the importance of punctuality, and I explained the reason why I was late. I only talked with her 10 minutes, because the next student came. At the end of the conversation, Annette gave me a reminder about punctuality again.

I was hectic on Thursday

I signed up for conversation partner on Thursday. I like talking with Annette. It was my second time to speak to her. I talked about my research paper "the comparison of New Zealand and Cyprus" and my harass. I looked at those books about it on the Internet. I was very disappointed about the result that almost every single book I needed for my research paper was off the shelf or someone else put on reserve at Scott library. It were back books that on shelves. Annette gave me some pieces of suggestion such as reference room, and periodical room. Moreover, students could not check out books from reference and periodical room, and there were current academic journals in periodical room. She run it down to me. Maybe I could look for material through the method. I have not been finished with the outline of the research paper yet.
I hanged out with my classmates to visit The Bata Shoe Museum around downtown. All of the shoes could represent different ethnic culture, I thought. Three of them were my favorite. Each of them was typical Asian style. One was made in India. Others were made in 19th in China. I would like to mention to women silk embroidery shoes bound feet I liked it very much because it had detailed needle work and image as well as the meaning to cheer Chinese people up. The pattern was five bats. The pronunciation was the same as happiness in Chinese. That five bats was embroidered on silk shoes with silk thread meant that happiness came to you in ancient China. The meaning is very popular in China.
After visiting The Bata Shoe Museum, we had dinner at a Korean restaurant nearby Bloor Station. I had no any idea about Korean dish; so, Derek recommend me two dishes. Both of them were bibimbap . One was spicy, and the other was mild. I preferred spicy dish, I ordered the spicy. After then, I added a very delicious spicy sauce to it. I thought the so called Korean spicy sauce was very mild, I added the sauce to it twice. As Min Soo and Derek thought it was spicy enough, they asked me what I thought about it I felt it was OK when I had it. While we were at Bloor Station, my stomach was like burning. Derek suggested my drinking more at home. After returning home, I did not do anything except drinking.

A trouble about overdue books

I received an announcement about overdue books from Nexus. When Juanita handed the announcement to me, I looked at her in some perplexity. I did not know what happened to me because I was sure I had never borrowed any book in this session from Nexus. Juanita said that I should go to Nexus to check it. During break, I said to monitors and explain about it. From the beginning to the end, I emphasized that I had not borrowed any book in the session. Moreover, I pointed out the problem of process that students borrowed books. After saying their student ID, anyone could borrow books from Nexus. In other words, the monitors who worked for Nexus did not confirm their identities. Maybe someone else used my student ID. It was the cause which lead to the situation. The monitor said he did not give me an definite answer. I did not do anything except waiting for the result that they checked it .

The problem was solved on the next day. Their supervisor said it was Ok. Even though the overdue books record about me was not deleted, it did not exert influence on me. I could borrow books and videos from Nexus.

conversation partner

I think I was a luck dog on this Tuesday. As I forgot singing up for the conversation partner session in advance and I was not free on Thursday , I had to have a conversation on Wednesday or Friday. When I accessed the Internet to sing up for conversation partner session about 12:00 on this Tuesday, I found an appointment was free on that day. Despite the appointment was 12:20 in Vanier 117 and I did not know where it was, I decided to meet the conversation partner Annette.

This was my first time to have conversation with Annette. She looked like an Asian. Firstly, she introduced herself. Her mother was from Hong Kong, and she was born and bred in Canada. She majored in fine art at York University. She can speak Cantonese. She said that if you had any question, I would explain it in Cantonese. I only spoke standard Chinese except English. Then, she asked me some questions about my background, my purpose to study abroad and so on. Those questions were boring. As long as I met a new conversation partner, they asked my the same questions. Compared with other conversation partners, Annette’s distinctive features were that her pronunciation was very clear and her accent was a little bit like Asian. Therefore, I easily responded to what she said at quick speed. We communicate with each other efficiently and effectively. After talking with Annette about the following questions, I mentioned that What about Faculty of Engineering at York University. She said that Faculty of Engineering was weakness for York University. She advised me to apply for other university such as Waterloo.

Royal Ontario Museum

The Royal Ontario Museum is the best museum in Toronto. I was excited when I went into the museum. It made me deeply impression. How gorgeous was is!

I was especially interested in the gallery of Egypt. I listened to the record of Egyptian and watched the video about pyramids in the hall. Furthermore, playing caricature provided me an opportunity to know how to built pyramids and its interior structure. I scaned a real mummy, saw jars which were filled with bodily organs, and learnt the process of mummification.

I had to conceal the appointment with conversation partner on line because I had appointment about application for engineering faculty at 10:00. I guessed I maybe late so I concealed the appointment ahead of time. Fortunately, I was borrowing some books in NEXUS when I met my ex-session classmate. She signed up for the conversation 1 0f 3 in the following 20mintues. I went on with her to wait for her appointment. When it was 11:40 that she appointed, other people did not arrive. I said to the conversation partner: “can I join your conversation”.She was very accommodating. She agreed to speak to me. At first, I told them the reason that I concealed my appointment, then I referred to the future plan about career. I have never applied for YORK UNVERSITY. I am studying at Yueli to practice oral English and know Canada university situation. The conversation partner agreed on this point. She said that It is OK because engineering is weakness in YORK. Then I mentioned how to apply for graduate school efficiently. She said that she had no any idea bout that because she has not applied for it. She told me information in general such as requirement of admission office, especially deadline varied faculty or graduate school, the Process of application. The basic requirement of admission office is performance level B and IELTS 6.5. AS I did not plan to continue studying at YORK UNVERSITY, she suggested taking IELTS as soon as possible. In the end, she pointed out my problem that listening is my drawback. Maybe both Tv and radio are accesses to improve my listening.

Yesterday, we had a workshop on how to take advantage of all library resources effectively. As I make my presentation at least 15 minutes in seminar, and I have not decided its outline, it is useful for me. It was key word that I entered, and all the entries about the key word-obesity appeared. I picked three or four entries, and wrote down the call numbers of these books. It is very convenient to find the location of those books for me. I did not take my laptop to school because I wanted to borrow books today. Before having core class, I tried to post a comment on someone else’s blog, and it failed. Fortunately, Derek told me what I should do, and he showed how to post a comment. After having seminar today, I planned to go to the library. I met my classmate in ex-semianr on the way to the library, and we took the same number bus, so we got home together. I am going to arrive early to borrow those books tomorrow.

What a busy day

I had a seminar “Canada social issues ”on Thursday. One of requirements was to pick a topic everyone would present about. Unfortunately, Ronaldo and I chose the same topic. It is the last topic on the list. As Ronaldo gave up the last topic-obesity, the instructor gave priority to my choice. His manners stamped him a gentleman. I felt grateful him very much.

It was a busy day on Thursday. It was my first time to sign up for the conversation partner in the session. As I did not know where the appointed room was, I had to arrive ahead of time. Fortunately, I met Juanita on the way. She told me how to went there.

It was the first time to speak with the conversation partner. At first, I introduced me to her. After that, she asked me what you spoke about today. I said to make a mini presentation about Chinese ShouZhou embroidery tomorrow. The presentation was assigned on Monday. I had searched some information on the Internet. I planned to tell about it in advance. She was interested in Chinese embroidery, and she wondered how to finish a piece of embroidery. I said that what Chinese ShouZhou embroidery was. Varied patterns are embroidered onto fine silk with silk thread. I mentioned the characteristic of Suzhou embroidery is two-sided pattern. The picture is repeated on both sides of the embroidered piece. The stitching on embroidered pieces is done with silk threads. They have been divided until the actual thread is almost impossible to see. Through the repetition of stitches a very dense embroidering occured. At last, I showed her a Chinese ShouZhou double-sided embroidery silk scarf. She thought Chinese ShouZhou embroidery is highly commendable, especially intricate needlework. After listening to my speaking, she suggested going down my speaking speed to get my ideas across.

My seminar

I was absent yesterday because I was ill. While I was having core class, I had information about my seminar. My seminar is Canadian social issue. It is not my first choice; I feel diappointed. Moreover, my seminar classmate Ronaldo spoke about the first class assignment. To search information about banana and discuss banana in class is the assignment.
